Living in an area with mountains and hills can make a patio or deck an impossibility —- or should we say, improbability?
While many of us are satisfied with a small deck, this 12′ X 24′ deck is large enough for comfortable entertaining. While the size of the deck is impressive, what is more impressive is that this deck was built in what had been designated as an unusable area.
The home is located in a very hilly part of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The back of the house backs up to a retaining wall, making any yard area behind it practically useless. That is until Double S Carpentry took a look at the available space!
With a back yard that rises above the roof line of the existing home, who would have guessed that a patio could be built on so steep a grade?
Utilizing the same theory as used by the cantilever umbrella, the deck or patio was constructed in much the same way. Well anchored on the back side, the cantilever deck extends beyond any flat area of ground beneath.
Of course, it goes without saying that this excellent use of “unusable land” should not be undertaken by anyone except professionals.
Allowing free flow of air, wire was placed as panels to protect young ones from falling from the patio. The deck rail was capped with boards wide enough to allow for placing beverages during an evening get together.
All in all this cantilever deck or patio has not only allowed the family to have the much coveted summer patio, but has created a use for previously unusable land.
