Almost all of us enjoy spending time outdoors in warmer weather. However, lack of lighting can greatly diminish the usability of your porches, patios, decks and other outdoor areas. In order to make these areas great places to spend time after dark, lighting should be sufficient for the activities that will take place there.
If you will be cooking outdoors on your barbecue grill and eating outdoors on your patio, you need adequate lighting around the grill area as well as enough light at the patio table or tables to be able to see the food you are eating. These areas need more light than an area that will not be used for cooking and/or dining. You can accomplish this in several ways. Some patio lighting ideas to consider are specialized grill lights, patio wall lights, hanging lights or outdoor lamps.
If you have a patio area that will be used for relaxing and enjoying conversation with family and friends, it will need enough light that you can see the people you are talking with. The amount of lighting will depend on the size of the area as well as how many seating areas are in place. For small areas with only a couple of seating areas, a couple of strategically placed patio floor lamps should provide all the lighting you need. For larger areas, additional lamps as well as other types of fixtures will be needed.
You may have a pool, spa or other area that has enough lighting but you would just like to add a little fun to the space. There are all sorts of options for fun lighting. Patio string lights and rope lights can be wound around trees, garden ornaments, garden arches, doorways and lots of other places to add some twinkling fun. If you are looking for lighting to go overhead, there are lots of different styles of string lights available from shapes that resemble miniature lanterns to multi colored paper or glass globes to fun shapes that look like fireflies.
Take a look at your outdoor patio areas and make sure that the lighting is adequate for the activities that will take place there. You will find that with proper lighting you will enjoy these areas even more.
