Bistro Sets
The bistro table along with the matching chairs, usually two or four in number, are distinctly French in style and design. In fact, bistro sets have reportedly been around for a couple of hundred years. One report is that when the Russians occupied France in the early 1880's the Russian word for "Hurry" sounded similar to the word "Bistro." Often the Russian occupiers would demand quick service by yelling to the bar tender or the food vendor in Russian. The word evolved into Bistro.
Of course, that story has been discarded by some who insist that the word bistro came into being in the mid-1880's, a take off on the word for cow, and was used when the French version of cowboys would come into town for a night of revelry.
The truth is that today we know the bistro table as a small round table, ideally designed to seat two or four around it. Often found at outdoor cafes or ice cream parlors, the bistro set has been adopted by those with small patios and even brought inside to serve as a small eating area in the kitchen or breakfast room. Whatever the use, bistro sets have won a place in American decor.
