Quite often a patio fire pit is the answer to adding warmth and character to a patio.  The patio fire pit above is made of stone.  This fire pit is a permanent part of the patio and adds a focal point and a gathering area on cool spring nights.

Fire pits can be large or small, stone or cast iron, round or square.  Without a doubt, a fire pit can be a welcome addition to a patio.

With an open fire on the patio it is necessary that someone be present while the fire is burning, even when the fire is fueled by natural gas.  It the fire in the pit is created with wood or charcoal it will be necessary to keep a close eye on the fire.  Wind can cause sparks to fly and possibly damage more than the patio.

Gas fueled fire pits are probably safer because once the gas is turned off the fire goes out.  However, while the fire is blazing someone should always be standing watch, especially in windy conditions. While sparks may not fly from the generation of the fire, if it is windy dry leaves or small bits of paper such as a napkin may blow across the blaze and catch fire.

Of course, if small children are on the patio while the fire is burning it is always necessary for an adult to be present.  Fire pits can be a wonderful addition to a patio as long as proper care is taken.
