Materials to Consider For Elegant Covered Patio Designs

in Patio Covers and Designs

There are so many options to consider when you are looking at patio design ideas that it can quickly get you feeling overwhelmed.  After all, you want your patio to be a place of solace, an oasis from the daily grind, right?  This is why it is important to consider a few factors before jumping right into those patio cover plans.

First of all, decide on what type of use you plan to have for your patio.  It doesn’t need to be restrictive, you can enjoy your patio in many ways.  However, it will be best for the ultimate designs you come up with if you have an idea as to how you plan on using your space.  For example, do you have children and hope to have a simple shaded area where you can relax while they play?  Or, will you be using your patio for more informal entertaining with friends and guests eating and sitting around a nice patio fireplace?

You can see that these types of plans are not mutually exclusive, but they are quite different if they make up the majority of the way you spend your time outdoors.  So, keep this in mind as we discuss the various types of patio covers and the materials that you might use in your patio designs.

Again, the way you use your patio is going to be a big factor in helping you determine what materials will be best for your space.  Covered patio designs that call for a lot of stonework and tile, are likely to create a more formal or elegant looking patio.  You can imagine this being a rustic looking Spanish villa or Mediterranean style patio area.  There are also ways of using stamped or stained concrete to create a nice look while being a more affordable and sometimes more durable option than certain stone products.

Wood is also a very common material to use for a patio.  Because of its ease in construction, durability and aesthetic properties, it is easy to see why it is so popular.  Woods like cedar and redwood make for very appealing and quite handsome patio designs.  This is due in part to the fact that the natural wood grain looks very appealing and also can be stained or sealed to create a simple, yet elegant piece of functional outdoor artwork, really.  These structures usually require some yearly maintenance to keep them performing well for you year after year.  For patio cover designs that are both simple yet elegant looking, consider combining the wood and stone materials together
